Rider blog: Ros Canter prepares for the big day

The course is big and technical and there is lots to remember so fingers crossed I can do my big man justice tomorrow...

It’s Friday evening, and writing this blog will hopefully take my mind off what’s to come tomorrow!

Alby was a superstar in his dressage yesterday. He was very chilled out and let me ride for every mark and a mistake free test. He scored 44.9 and lies in joint 20th going in to the cross country. I couldn’t be prouder of him although I found it a little frustrating watching the judges give higher and higher scores today. Unfortunately that’s often the downside of having a Thursday dressage. I still have lots more I would like to work on for the future though which makes his good mark even more exciting.

So onwards to the cross county! I walked the course twice today. This morning with Chris Bartle and this evening with Alby co-owner and my coach Caroline Moore. There’s time for one more walk in the morning on my own. I like to do the last walk by myself. I can talk through my lines and really clarify where I need to prepare and make my turns for the jumps. The course is big and technical and there is lots to remember so fingers crossed I can do my big man justice tomorrow.

Alby was on good form when I rode him today. We just did 20 mins practicing moving on and collecting, and putting in some tight turns to check my power steering was working. It’s tempting to jump, particularly if you have a free day, but we decided that Alby didn’t need to work too hard today so after a quick work out he has enjoyed grazing outside the house with Sarah, his groom.

I have also had a chance to meet up with my sponsors. Fortunately their stands are opposite each other which has been great as they have got to know each other and become friends. Mum has also very kindly taken them around the course as it’s something busy trade stand owners often don’t get time to do. Both companies are so supportive of of me, Emerald Green Feeds keeping Alby in top condition and Eqclusive providing us with a range of products including amazing brushes which make Alby look and feel fabulous.

Keep everything crossed for me tomorrow, it’s going to be an exciting day! X
