Biography
British rider Richard Jones (41) gained his third completion of the event last year and his first with Alfies Clover (10th) his entry this year also. In September the combination was 7th at Burghley.
Richard is based near Oakham in Rutland, where he was born. He went to school in Stamford and was a member of the Burghley Pony Club and for several years was a runner and score collector at Burghley. After school Richard was based in Sussex with dressage trainer Dane Rawlins before setting up his own yard at home – now shared with his wife Victoria – where he has a yard of eventers and young horses.
In 2012 Richard came ninth in the four-star at Pau with Highland Ford. In December 2016 Richard suffered a serious foot injury after the horse he was riding slipped over then crushed his foot when getting up.
Richard trains with Mark Kyle and Di Lampard.
He is married to Victoria who competes in dressage – she has competed in the British CDI’s at Hartpury and Hickstead. The couple has two young children – Freddie (11) and Florence (9). Outside of eventing Richard likes fishing and watching rugby.
Richard bought Tajraasi, now graded with SHB(GB), the sire of Alfies Clover in partnership with Tom March. Tajraasi is now available at stud in the UK.
Alfies Clover is a 16-year-old Irish-bred gelding. He is by the thoroughbred Tajraasi (by Trempolino) out of a mare by Clover Hill. He was bought as an unbroken three-year-old from Goresbridge horse trials from his breeder James Hickey. Last year he completed both Badminton (10th) and Burghley (7th). Richard competes Killballyboy Bob who is also by Tajraasi – the pair was 4th in the 8/9 year old championship at Blenheim 2018.
