Pony poetry please, thanks Pippa!

To cheer us all out of the disappointment of losing Badminton Horse Trials 2020, three time event winner and author Pippa Funnell has been spreading lockdown positivity with a children’s poetry competition. Pippa was staggered to receive a huge number of wonderful entries and, on what would have been Badminton Sunday at 4pm (10th May), announced the winners as Lola Moon of the 10 and under category with a beautiful powerful poem ‘Between My Pony’s Ears’ and 13 year old Sophie Bayne-Powell in the 11-16 category with a clever poem about a dream event with her pony Sam.

Pippa said: “As you know this would have been Badminton week and I’m gutted not to be there; I had two horses that I was really looking forward to taking. There are going to be so many people disappointed and missing the great sport.

“I really really want to encourage people to read these unbelievable poems that youngsters have been sending in. I am no English expert but I have thoroughly enjoyed and still am enjoying reading them all. Thank you, all my little friends for your hard work and the wonderful drawings and the gorgeous photos and more than anything your huge infectious smiles.”

The entries were invited on Pippa’s Facebook page and the most-liked in each category plus some wildcards chosen by Pippa and her team were sent to an expert judging panel of sports presenters, Clare Balding and Alice Fox-Pitt, and Hickstead Director Lizzie Bunn. They selected a top five and Pippa organised for each of these to be read by a previous Badminton winner. Some of our favourite sporting heroes, Piggy March, Jonelle Price, Michael Jung, William Fox-Pitt, Sir Mark Todd, Oliver Townend, Mary King, Lucinda Green and xxx each rose to the spirit of the occasion for some brilliant poetry recitals.

Suming it up Pippa said: “The most special part of this competition which has touched me more than anything else is the overwhelming love all these youngsters have for ponies and horses. They really are our best friends.”

Something we can all identify with so well. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you Pippa, what a brilliant initiative!
