Biography

It is almost 20-years in 2003, since American Olympian Phillip Dutton (58) who is based in Pennsylvania last competed at Badminton. He last competed at Burghley in 2016. Last year with Badminton entry Z Phillip contested his seventh Olympic Games, was 8th in the Lexington 5* and the pair was a member of the American team in for the 2018 WEG.

Australian born Phillip is one of America’s most successful riders – he is currently #20 in the FEI world rider rankings. In 2021 he was a member of the American team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, his seventh consecutive Olympic Games (three of them representing Australia) winning team gold at Atlanta in 1996 and individual bronze in Rio 2016 (might Nice). In 2018 he was a member of the team for the WEG in Tryon – his sixth World Championship. In 2005 he rode three horses to top five placings at Lexington and was second at Burghley.

Born in 1963 in NSW Australia, Phillip grew up on the family farm. Most of his childhood was spent competing at PC rallies and horse trials and he continued to pursue his passion for riding during school and lwhilst at agricultural college. In 1991 he moved to the USA to train in an international and competitive environment and to prepare for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta – where he won team gold for Australia. In 2006 he became an American citizen and first represented the USA at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio winning team gold and individual silver. He has been awarded the USEA leading rider award 13 times, 1998, 2000 – 2010 and 2012.

With his wife Evie he owns and manages True Prospect Farm in PA. In 2021 he acquired a winter base in Florida. He is a respected coach and in 2009 was ‘Developing Rider’ coach of the year. He is a founder member of the Professional Riders Organisation and was its President in 2012/13. He has a stepdaughter and twin daughters and enjoys golf and tennis when time permits. His daughter Olivia (20) also competes.

Z (formerly Albano Z) is a 14-year-old Belgian-bred Zangersheide registered gelding. He is by Asca Z out of a mare by Babouche VH Gehucht Z. He was sourced in Portugal and formerly ridden by Duarte Seabra and acquired through Carol Gee. He was initially produced by Duarte who gained 7th place with him at the 6-year-old World Championships in Le Lions and competed him in FEI jumping classes. Phillip took the ride in 2015. He was a member of the team for WEG in 2018, was 4th at his first 5* at Lexington in 2018 and in 2021 competed in the Olympic games in Tokyo (21st).
