Biography
British rider Rosalind Canter (37) was second here last year with Badminton first timer Lordships Graffalo. Later in the year at the World Championships in Pratoni the pair was the highest placed of the British team in 4th place. At the end of the 2022 season she was 4th in the British Eventing rider ranking and is currently 3rd in the FEI World rider ranking.
It will be a first Badminton for her second entry Pencos Crown Jewel (a half sister to Lordships Graffalo). Last year the mare was 11th at Burghley and 2nd at Bramham.
In 2018 with Allstar B Ros won team and individual gold at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon (the pair was 3rd at Badminton) and in 2019 were members of the British gold medal team at the European Championships in Avenches.
Rosalind who is based near Louth in Lincolnshire grew up on the family farm at Hallington where she is now based. She spent her childhood riding around the farm with her parents and two sisters and was an active member of the South Wold Hunt North PC, producing her ponies from an early age. Silver Curtis, her first horse set her down the road of affiliated eventing. They were short listed for the junior team and together completed their first advanced class. Ros then studied Sport Science at Sheffield Hallam University, playing first team hockey as well as juggling horses and eventing. After graduating she went travelling for four months and decided on her return to pursue a career in eventing. In 2008 she took a summer job with Judy Bradwell that turned into four years. During this time she qualified horses for the Burghley Young Event Horse Final and the Young Horse Eventing Championships (winning both in 2011 with Cekatinka) and also represented Great Britain in the World University Equestrian Championships in Algeria, winning a silver medal in the show jumping. In 2010 she was reserve champion in the six-year-old class of the World Championships in Le Lions and won her first three-day event, the CCI1* at Osberton. At the end of 2011 Ros decided to run her own yard and in 2013 completed her first three-star and in 2014 was selected for her first British Nations Cup team. In 2015 she made her four-star debut at Burghley winning best ‘British first-timer’.
She gained her first Badminton completion in 2017 when 5th with Allstar B and subsequently made her first senior team appearance at the European Championships in Strzegom finishing 5th individually and winning a team gold medal. She also rode Zenshera in his first four-star at Luhmuhlen and he finished her successful year with 7th place at Pau.
Ros enjoys producing young horses and has been a regular finalist at the Burghley Young Event Horse finals.
Ros trains with Caroline Moore, Ian Woodhead and Chris Bartle. She enjoys sport and cherishes family time with partner Christopher McAleese and their three-year-old daughter.
Lordship Graffalo (aka Walter) owned by Michele Saul, is a British-bred SHB(GB) registered 10-year-old gelding. Bred by Lordships Stud at Writtle College under the guidance of Penny Wallace he is by Grafenstolz out of Cornish Queen by the former advanced stallion Rock King. (Cornish Queen was bred by Bridget Parker out of the advanced mare Cornish Faer). Cornish Queen is also the dam of Pencos Crown Jewel bred by Pennie Wallace. Graffalo was started as a 3-year-old by Ros who has produced him apart from his seven-year-old year when Tom McEwen took the reins while Ros was pregnant – the pair was 9th in the world Championships at le Lions. Lordships Graffalo was 2nd on his first Badminton in 2022.
Pencos Crown Jewel owned by Kate James and Annie Makin is a British-Bred SHB(GB) registered mare. Bred by Pennie Wallace she is a daughter of the l;eading event sire Jumbo out of Cornish Queen by the former thoroughbred advanced event stallion Rock King. (Cornish Queen was bred by Bridget Parker out of the advanced mare Cornish Faer). Crown Jewel is a half-sister to Badminton entry Lordships Graffalo – the pair share the same dam. She was acquired by her owner as a three-year-old from the breeder and sent to Ros to break in. The mare has completed two 5* events – she was 11th at Burghley last year.
