Biography

Alex has been a key figure on the international eventing scene ever since he first represented the host nation, China, at the Beijing (Hong Kong) Olympic Games in 2008, aged 18 and while still at school; he won the FEI’s inaugural ‘rising star’ award the following year. He has since represented China at three further Olympics, his best result being eighth on Don Geniro in Rio, Brazil, in 2016.

Alex has completed Badminton twice, in 2010 (Magenta el Jeans) and in 2016 (Harbour Pilot); in 2025 he retired on the cross-country with Chicko, his ride this year. He started competing Chicko, previously ridden by Polly Stockton, in 2023 and they have twice been placed at Pau CCI5*-L, sixth last year and fourth in 2024.

Alex, who lives at Tattenhall in Cheshire, came to live in England at the age of 10, having started riding in China, at the Beijing Shijingshan Equestrian Club. He has been heavily involved in the development of equestrian sport and horse welfare in China for many years and in 2023 led the Chinese team to team and individual gold at the Asian Games. His charity Horsemanship, in partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, helps give children from all backgrounds an introduction to riding.

Insights

Alex Hua Tian became the first Chinese athlete on record to compete at Badminton CCI5* when he made his debut in 2010 with two rides. This will be his fifth appearance at the venue, and he remains the only Chinese competitor to have done so.
From three CCI5* starts, Chicko averages sub-30 in the first phase. The best of these scores was 28.9 delivered at Pau in 2024.
