Director’s Blog – January 2023

Well, here we are with the Christmas break behind us and we are now back in the office and all has gone up a gear towards the run up to the 2023 event. With the Box Office opening, there is a real air of excitement. Despite a rather wet New Year, I have just come in from a ride on Paddy and it is a beautiful morning – almost like Spring!

I really enjoyed attending the Horse & Hound Awards evening at Cheltenham Racecourse at the end of last year and to see Nicola Wilson walk up to collect her award was very moving.

Now, looking forward to 2023 …

Eric Winter will be revealing his cross-country course over the coming months with some surprises in store! In the meantime, I can disclose that the course is taking in a route that has not been used previously.

The Mount Pond, which I referred to in my October blog, is benefitting from the large amount of rain we have received over the past weeks and is filling up fast.

Owners and riders will find they will all be able to park their horseboxes and caravans in the same vicinity as each other, but in a new location, where works are being carried out.

As some of you will be aware, last year the campsite sold out on day two of the Box Office being open, so the area has been enlarged, which hopefully means we will be able to accommodate all those wishing to camp at Badminton. It is great news that the Monday (show jumping day) is now a Bank Holiday allowing all to attend as normal.

The great majority of trade stands that exhibited in 2022 have rebooked for 2023 and I am very grateful to all our wonderful volunteers who have yet again committed to assist this year.

Altogether, Badminton 2023 promises to be a memorable weekend, with the coincidence of the Coronation of King Charles and the Queen Consort.  On Saturday, 6th May we will start the dressage at 8.00am and then there will then be a break so that everyone who wishes to can watch the Coronation on the big screens, after which the dressage will resume. The catering points and trade stands will stay open throughout the day and there should be a great atmosphere.

Here’s to 2023. I wish you all a very Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone back at Badminton in May.
