Biography

It will be first Badminton for UK-based American rider Katherine Coleman (34) who is based near Marlborough in Wiltshire. In 2016 Katherine, made her four-star debut at Lexington but withdrew after cross country.

Katherine, one of five sisters, is a native of New Orleans and due to her geographic location did not get into competitive eventing until college. She graduated from the University of Georgia (business management) with the aim of getting a job but after a year decided to go with the pull towards horses and started working on the family farm. She competed in showjumping and dressage and earned her US Dressage Federation bronze and silver medals. The acquisition of an eventing type young horse took her into the sport. In 2006 she won the CCI1* at Lexington.

Encouraged by Lucinda Green who she knew from having attended her clinics in 2012 Katherine came to the UK to work for Sam Watson and began to build up her string of event horses. She later moved to Headley Stud and then to Lissa Green’s yard. Last spring she returned home to America to prepare for and contest her first four-star event at Lexington with Courage on Fire but the pair withdrew after cross country. Katherine also competes three other horses at three-star level including Horseware Lukeswell who has been recently purchased from Sam Watson.

Alongside her eventing she runs the supplement company ReadySupp with friend Didi Verdina that employs four people.

Longwood owned by KC Eventing Ltd, is a 15-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding. He is by Limmerick (also the sire of four-star horses Shannondale Titan, Graf Liberty, Loughan Glen, Magennis) out of a mare by the leading sire Cavalier Royale. He was formerly produced and ridden by Charlotte Agnew from 2009-’13 to three-star level and was acquired by Katherine at the end of 2013. He is described as ‘A favourite in the stable yard who truly loves his job’. Badminton will be a first four-star for Longwood.
