Biography

British-based Brazilian Olympic rider Ruy Fonseca last competed at Badminton in 2009. With Badminton entry Tom Bombadill Too he represented Brazil at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Ruy who is based in near Wantage in Oxfordshire where he runs a yard, comes from an equestrian family and first rode at the age of four

Both his father and mother competed in high level showjumping and his father also played high goal international polo.

Ruy has served as a trainer for the Portugese team for World and Olympic Games and worked alongside the organising committee for the Olympic Games in Rio to help prepare for the equestrian competition.

Ruy trains with Mark Todd and is married to Renata who represents Brazil in dressage and was a bronze medallist at the 2007 Pan Am Games and is aiming for the WEG in 2018.

Outside of eventing Ruy is keen on tennis and FI and has ‘a huge passion for developing the sport of eventing’.

Tom Bombadill Too owned by Renata Costa, Andrea Costa and rider, is a 17-year-old Holstein gelding. He is by the former showjumper Carry out of mare by the thoroughbred Sir Shostakovich. Tom was a former livery horse in the yard in Oxford and only started competing at higher level in eventing in 2009 since when he has represented Brazil in two Olympic Games, two World Games and two Pan Am Games. Ruy’s wife Renata competes him in dressage.
