Biography

British rider Georgie Spence (29), who is based near Chippenham in Wiltshire, last competed at Badminton in 2015. She has completed here four times previously. Last year with Badminton entry Halltown Harley she was the winner of the Nations Cup three-star competition in Wiener Neustadt, in Austria – her first Nations Cup.

Georgie has been a full-time rider since leaving school and with help from her mother Jo runs a yard from home. Georgie first competed in show jumping until asked to be a member of her school’s eventing team. In 2004 she was reserve for the 2004 British European Pony team and decided to stick with eventing. Four years later she first competed at Badminton aged 19 with Running Brook and in 2009 was the only rider to complete the cross country with two horses inside the time.

In 2006 she won the Under-18 National Championships, and for two years running (2007 & 2008) was the recipient of the BE Edy Goldman trophy presented to the leading rider Under 21. After a successful 2009 season Georgie was selected for the Young Rider European Championships with Skylight, bred by FEI judge Christian Landolt, and won team gold. In 2015 she gained her best result when 15th at Burghley with Wii Limbo.

She trains with Chris Bartle and Laura Tomlinson.

Halltown Harley is a 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding. He is by the Irish-based Selle Francais sire Harlequin Du Carel (also the sire of event horses Boleybawn Ace, Back to Business, The Court Jester). She is also the dam of International showjumpers Camblin (by Lux) formerly ridden by Shane Breen, Dorada (William Funnell) and BP Blondey both also by Harlequin Du Carel. Harley was formerly ridden to three-star by New Zealander Caroline Powell; Georgie acquired the ride at in the middle of 2016. Badminton will be a first four-star for the horse.

Wii Limbo is a Dutch-bred KWPN registered 15-year-old gelding. He is by Highline (a son of the thoroughbred Sit This One Out) out of a mare by Landwind II B (the sire of four-star horse Pardon Me). He was bought as an unbroken three-year-old and is the first horse that Georgie has produced from backing to four-star. He has jumped three double-clears at four-star.
