Biography

Swedish rider Ludwig Svennerstal (25) is based in the UK at Mark Todd’s Wiltshire yard near Swindon. Ludwig last competed at Badminton in 2014 and gained his first completion gaining a top 10 finish with Alexander. Last year with Badminton entry King Bob he completed Luhmuhlen.

Ludwig was a member of the Swedish team for London 2012 where he finished 20th with Shamwari and aged 21 had the accolade of being the youngest rider to compete in eventing at Greenwich. In 2013 the pair was 10th at the European Championships and members of the Swedish team that won the silver medal. He immediately came back from Malmo to compete at Burghley where he was eighth with Badminton entry King Bob. His success during the year was recognised by the Event Rider’s Association (ERA) who presented him with the 2013 Shearwater ‘Rising Star’ award. (Shamwari was sold at the beginning of the 2014 to American rider Boyd Martin). In 2013 & ’15 he represented Sweden at the World Young Horse Championships.

He was selected for the 2015 European Championships but withdrew (Franzipan) after the first horse inspection.

On his arrival in the UK Ludwig was, for four-years, based at the Yorkshire Riding Centre during which time he progressed from competing at the Young Rider Europeans in 2010 to competing in his first four-star in just over 12 months under the tutelage of Christopher Bartle. In January 2014 he relocated to Wiltshire.

His father and Mother both competed and Ludwig competed at two Junior European Championships (’07 & ’08). His sister Ellen who also represented Sweden at Junior and Young Riders European Championships and competes successfully at three-star level.

Ludwig trains with Maria Gretzer, Christoph Hess, Mark Todd, Nick Burton and Grant Wilson. He enjoys skiing, football and the gym.

King Bob, owned by Svennerstål Eventing AB, is 17-year-old British-bred gelding. He is by the Thoroughbred King of Siam (a son of Habitat). He was produced to four-star level by British rider Michael Owen (also entered for Badminton) and acquired by Ludwig in 2010 who describes him as; ‘Quite quirky and hot but an amazing trier and friend’.
